I initially will teach beginners by learning the musical alphabet, identification of keys on the piano,direction of sounds on the piano  How to hold their hands and the proper way to use their hands and fingers to play notes We begin our music by playing songs on the piano with letters in order to acquaint the position of the notes on the piano  We then transition to reading notes on the staff We learn about Rhythm of the music  Values of notes and how they receive the amount of time they get  I teach them to read time signatures and values of the time signatures,We study how rests are acquainted in relation to the type of note we use As the student progresses we start learning about Key Signatures, Flats, Sharps Accidentals, Scales and Chords Depending upon the age of the person I will use different books to help them begin playing or continue playing at the level they arrived at and progress thereafter   I cover a wide scope of Theory  My belief is that a student should understand why they are playing a note, rhythm, chord  I believe my students should not only learn to play a particular piece but any piece on the level they are at in their studies Read More

I have a Master's Degree in Musicology from the University of Louisville and a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies from Furman University. I have 30 years of music experience. I introduce double stop positioning, bar positions, forms for 12 bar and 1-4-5- chord patterns in different styles of music (this can range from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix). I then move to introducing songs than have the same core chords, but in different sequences, so students can see broader applications. I also have an favorite tool of mine that especially helps with theory -- a wheel that has the circle of 5ths carved into it, with patterns and relations between the keys carved into an inner wheel on it as well. I believe in creating a custom lesson plan for my students. This is important for any age! Students (young and old) need to have something to work towards. I enjoy allowing student to pick what types of music they want to learn how to play and incorporating that music into their lesson plans. I will typically use a whiteboard to teach student how to read music and make the lesson interactive, and adjust the lesson to fit the learning level they are at. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For me it is essential that a student learn first all the techniques exercises and then start to create music. After that I started to teach how to respect the essential aspects in a piece: the fingering, the bowing, the dynamics, the tempo and others. Read More
