As I have taught for many years, I feel encouraged and motivated when I can pass along my love for music. Nothing is more inspiring to me than to see someone's face light up when they pick up their instrument and learn. I set tailored goals for my students to reach every week, so that they have specific targets to reach. Having started piano relatively late, I was always taking account of what my experience and thoughts were as I progressed forward. I am familiar with and aware of the issues that bog down a lot of beginner students (of all ages) and try to solve these issues in unconventional and exciting ways. I don't believe that performing the same exercise over and over will get you to where you want to be -- music-making is something that happens over a very long period of time but there is always something you can do on the short term that will prove to be rewarding and musically stimulating. Even my beginner students have been able to compose their own tunes using a few simple chords and some basics in rhythm and meter that I have taught them. Moreover, it is their idea for lyrical content and the mood of the song that really pushes their learning into an accelerated pace. In my experience, the Faber series is the most widely followed to get students started on their musical journey. As students progress, I ensure that they develop a repertoire that consists of at least 3 songs.
