I am a passionate and dedicated classical pianist and piano teacher. I have been playing the piano for most of my life, and teaching for the last two years. I have degrees in psychology and music from the University of Washington in Seattle. In university, I was selected by audition to receive private one-on-one piano instruction, and performed regular recitals. I began teaching private music lessons while I was working on my Bachelor of Music degree. I also was a teaching assistant for guitar classes at the university that I attended. After I graduated I continued to teach privately, at music stores and technical colleges including Lake Washington Technical College. I taught at Bellevue American Music for over twenty years. I teach many styles including classical, jazz and modern styles and I encourage my students to explore different genres of music to keep them excited and motivated. Read More

No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. I have been teaching bass guitar for more than 20 years. When i began teaching bass it was a favor for a friend and I found out that I liked it! I began to give lessons to friends and family which transitioned into friends children, boy and girls clubs, and churches. In addition to lesson and scale books I like to heavily supplement technical material, finger strengthening exercises, repertoire appropriate to playing level, and theory. I also send students home with listening homework from time to time, which includes listening to works from famous composers on youtube and then having a brief conversation about those pieces at the start of our next lesson. I believe understanding the scope of an instrument from more than just the technical aspect of it really enhances the learning experience and makes students value the techniques they are learning. I have a very laidback, low-pressure approach - if you didn't practice, it's not the end of the world! I think back to my own days of taking lessons and remember how much more I improved in this type of environment, and how much more I loved the process. The difference between these approaches can be night and day, both in results and morale out of the student (which, again, I know from experience as a teacher, but also from my experience as a student).
