Every lesson begins with vocal warm ups and breathing exercises, the importance of which can't be understated. Just as athletes wouldn't take the field without stretching, singers should never sing without giving their voice time to warm up. Warming up also serves as an excellent way for Jon to gauge student progress and make sure they are vocally healthy. After warm-ups, we move on to song study. I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, or draft up my own exercises.  I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs.  I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique.  I also teach songs that the student would like to learn.  I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning. I tailor the program to the student's needs. A student seeking a traditional eduction would be presented with method materials such as Simandl, as well as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Pop, jazz and other genres of music could be explored, depending on the goals of the student. As a jazz musician, I find that learning multiple styles opens up whole worlds of expression and concept. When I was 15 years old I began teaching to a few kids I knew from high school on guitar. I also began teaching my friend Max Kroll's little brother who was only in 3rd grade at the time. I continued teaching on and off for money and just for friends who wanted to learn throughout the last ten years.
