I am not a passive bystander at lessons; I jump right into the music and guide students on how to best read and play each song. A theory-centered approach to piano is very important. When your child takes lessons, he or she won't merely learn how to play piano, but how to understand and love all music. Every child is capable of learning how to play piano and of being proud of what they have accomplished. Read More

I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More

I studied percussion under Dr. Koontz at Eastern Kentucky University, where I learned to play all sorts of different styles ranging from classical to global. I performed with Eastern Kentucky University's percussion ensemble on various instruments ranging from vibes to marimba, concert snare, and even pan. Soon after, I auditioned for a World Class Indoor Percussion ensemble in Lexington, Kentucky, where I grew exponentially under the tutelage of world-famous instructors such as Nick Angelis and Zach Schlicher. For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. For my teenage students, I ask them about any music that they'd like to play in the future as it keeps them engaged in learning. Read More

Hi! I'm Maeve. I am a professional soprano with 13 years of instruction and 4 years of paid experience as a performer under my belt. Since 2011, I have attended voice programs at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Brevard Music Center, and VOICExperience, and I regularly work in churches and sing weddings. I recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, where I studied with Dr. Dennis Bender. Dr. Bender's students have studied at Juilliard, won the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and sung with Houston Grand Opera - these are just a few of many success stories. Read More

I used other activities such as walking, running, dancing, and boxing to demonstrate performance techniques and to make students understand the importance of natural gesture, inertia, and relaxation. I provided students with a "Good Sound" repertoire that spanned different levels of difficulty and incorporated folk, popular, jazz, and traditional classical music to match their needs and interests. I organized regular recitals to encourage students' daily practice and nurture their public performance skills to overcome stage fright. Read More
