Nothing is more important than meeting my students where they are at. While I use the same method books, I understand that progress looks different for each student. Learning piano should not only be rewarding, it should also be fun! In each lesson, I try to maintain an environment of learning while also using a variety of games, activities, and exercises around the concept of the day. I like to tailor my lesson plans to each individual student. For vocalists, I take age and ability into account and will usually target one or two elements of technique at a time. Once I have a grasp on their level and voice type and what sorts of music they are interested in, I will pick out repertoire that will be fun and challenging for the student, and will put into practice the elements of technique we work on in warm ups. I always begin with an interview to get a feel for the student’s level and interest. I start out with basics; musical alphabet, finding keys in the piano, finger numbers, listening. The method books I prefer are the Music Tree series, the Schaum series, Bastien notecards and i have recently began looking into Piano Pronto. Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. Positive reinforcement is key. I never learned from the mean or the overly strict teachers. In fact those teachers pushed me in the opposite direction of wanting to pursue music professionally. By going at the pace that is comfortable to the student, and praising them at every hurdle they encounter, the progress made can be exponentially greater than if the student is rushed to prepare a piece of music they don't truly care for in the first place. I do combine elements of other books or methods I've seen or learned myself too though, and am open to working through any books that the student themself finds interesting.
