I am an active collaborative pianist. I coach singers and play with guest or student instrumentalists for their recitals, juries every semester. I believe that I have a broad knowledge of vocal and instrumental repertoire and musical styles. I have also actively cultivated my written and verbal communication skills through extensive scholarship and research, and culminating presentations and lecture recitals. Throughout this time, I have also continued to pursue critical performance opportunities, including a recent recital that encompassed the premiere of several compositions, at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust, Opera Center America in New York City, and N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art in Detroit. I work with what level and progression suits you, and I'm super-easy to get along with. Also, I believe in positive reinforcement. There are some old school teachers who sometimes degrade a pupil when they're not doing an exercise correctly. Every lesson begins with vocal warm ups and breathing exercises, the importance of which can't be understated. Just as athletes wouldn't take the field without stretching, singers should never sing without giving their voice time to warm up. Warming up also serves as an excellent way for Jon to gauge student progress and make sure they are vocally healthy. After warm-ups, we move on to song study. With multi-stylistic performance experience, I have had the pleasure of working with artists including Wheatus (UK No. 2 Billboard with "Teenage Dirtbag"), Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing), Andrew W.K., Viktor Kirly (NBC The Voice 2015 - Top 24), and Kate Nauta (Hollywood actress in Transporter 2 and the Game Plan). I have performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Brazil and was a member of the 42 date 2015 Wheatus 15th anniversary European tour. With the band, I also appeared on the Ray D'Arcy show, featured live on Ireland's premiere TV network RT One, and headlined the Trebur Open Air Festival (Germany) and Sligo Summer Festival (Ireland), playing for up to 10,000 people.
