For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. I've recently moved to the Bryan/College Station area to work at Texas AM as part of their Center for Teaching Excellence. I also play piano at Covenant Presbyterian Church! I received my PhD in Fine Arts from Texas Tech in 2018, having studied there with Dr. William Westney, performing recitals, accompanying instrumentalists and vocalists, teaching group classes and private lessons, as well as serving as pianist at multiple churches. My teaching experience involves both in the school classroom setting and outside in the private studio. I was given the opportunity to work as a vocal consultant at the middle school level in 2016 and coached the students one-on-one on their region competition pieces. The following year, I taught private voice lessons of which most were beginning students. When it comes to drills/exercises/scales/etc., I try to use challenging pieces to substitute for them as much as possible. This makes practice more enjoyable, and gives the student more pieces (as opposed to exercises) to play for family and friends while still building on their skills and keeping them challenged. A huge part of music is collaboration and performance with others, so I make playing along with others on various instruments a part of my teaching once the student is sufficiently skilled for it.
