For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I continued to study classical violin until about 16, when I became highly involved in choir and theater. I was selected for the Texas All State Mixed Chorus three years in a row. I also sang professionally for St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston for three years. At about this time I also began teaching myself piano, and have continued my growth on the instrument to this day. If there at level three but haven't touched 16th note triplets and go from there. I am classically trained, and studied classical piano as well as Jazz in college and beyond. I enjoy learning and teaching all types of music, including composition and improvisation.
