For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Faber collection (Piano basic adventures) or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I believe the secret to improvement is playing everyday, even if it is just for 5-10 minutes. As far as studying a improvisation, listening to music is another secret that can not be overestimated. Passion for playing music must stem from a passion of listening and enjoying music. I have been teaching for two years, and I truly enjoy it. I was fortunate enough to coach middle school violinists last summer, and I was able to help them individually, as well as help them perform together. Teaching, for me, is a way of shaping the next generation of musicians or music enthusiasts. I can teach students of any ability level, and it is always a joy to work with and get to know a new student. Read More

It is rewarding to teach piano. If a student is really interested in learning, it is such a pleasure. If they are young, I usually use a book that includes cartoons between lessons. For adults I use an adult book, but try to include a solo that they can handle that relates to a season or something they are interested in playing. There are many books on the market. I usually chose one that suits the students personality. Read More

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My father taught me first the little that he knows from childhood, the value and name of the notes and he sang a lot at home, always instilling in me the love for music, art ,culture and knowledge in general. He also used to take me to concerts and to meet musicians and artists. Later I have had many teachers that inspired me and each one has something great to learn from. In Cuba Leo Brouwer was king, both as composer and teacher. Along the way, books and principles by Hindemith, Knud Jeppessen, Charles Villiers Stanford. R.O. Morris, Schoenberg, Edward Bairstow and Nadia Boulanger, Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, Chick Corea and Rudolph Ganz have inspired me.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose classical guitar as my primary instrument because it was part of my culture, Spanish. Because it was part of the generation of folk and world music yet can be played as an instrument for classical music. It cuts both ways and last because it is portable. It can be taken on a journey and easy to carry and use. It is a harmonic instrument that can be useful for accompaniment of song but it is also a solo instrument capable of beautiful expression and subtlety. It is really a magical instrument.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
1-My graduation as a guitarist where I played among other pieces the guitar concerto by Joaquin Rodrigo "Fantasia for a Gentil Hombre" 1989.
2-The teaching of voices in choirs ,including large and complex baroque music in Jamaica with some of the singers having to learn from zero how to hold a melody in tune. The transcription of the instruments from a symphonic setting and recording of the transcription to produce the sound tracks was involved. 1997-2002
3-The coaching of the band "The Revelation" again with some of its members having difficulty reading and performing and the transcription and arrangement of music for the lead singer and the orchestra. The final result was good between 2009 -2013
4-The performance of Mario Castelnouvo Tedesco's quintet for guitar and strings with the Shulman string quartet in Buffalo in 2015
