I'm a recent graduate of St. Olaf College who has just settled in St. Paul. I've had the opportunity to perform with Minnesota Opera and will soon be performing with the Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. My interests range from opera and sonatas to pop and jazz, and I love to explore new avenues of musical creativity. I began teaching clarinet lessons as a college student in 1990, and got my first job as a band director in 1993. I have not taught lessons in a home studio setting (only at school), but would be able to teach students in my home if desired, or would travel to students' homes or teach online if preferred. I have taught piano, drums, and all band instruments since 1993. Some of my biggest strengths as a private lesson teacher are patience, differentiating instruction to fit the needs of each learner, and finding material that will be both fun and beneficial for students to practice. Piano: I prefer Faber Piano Adventures, but I can be flexible if the student is in the middle of another series already. I have also taught the young beginner series by Faber. Strings: I use a traditional approach, but I am not tied to any particular method book. I can supplement whatever is being taught in school or the lessons can stand on their own. Depending on whether it be voice or instrumental my methods will differ slightly. For beginning voice students (-12) I teach out of a folk songs book, and if they choose, challenging disney repertoire which adds an element of fun, but also is educational. for Intermediate students (12-15) I use the same folk songs book but apply more advanced techniques on proper singing technique, then depending on their level, I might do more advanced repertoire which fits them. My style of teaching is different for each student. After meeting the student, I suggest setting a goal, working towards that goal for 4 -6 weeks - after which an assessment is made by me to determine how best to continue. For the younger student I often demonstrate, or play with them. Encouraging recital participation, finding the right performance piece helps me determine what inspires the student, young or old. I graduated from McNally Smith College of Music magna cum laude in 2011 with a bachelors in vocal performance. I played everywhere from Duluth. Minnesota to Lima, Peru: sharing the stage with artists as diverse as Andres Prado and Judi Donaghy. In addition to my McNally Smith Degree, I received master classes from Bobby McFerrin and the New York Voices.
