I really enjoy seeing my students enjoy learning music as that brings me back to my memories of learning. I find it is important to allow students to work at their own pace so they will not become frustrated and lose interest in what I am teaching them. With that I feel it is important to take as much time as the students needs in order for them to grasp what they are being taught as I feel it will hurt them down the road later when they start to get into playing the music as it will get harder down the road. I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. I began teaching private lessons 6 years ago, primarily teaching drum set, and continued to have students on and off as some of my students from my home town would take lessons seasonally when I was not at school. I also have worked as a battery and front ensemble technician at various high schools in Indiana and Kentucky, co-ran a World Percussion Camp at Central Music Academy in Lexington, Kentucky for two years, and have been brought in on multiple occassions as a guest lecturer/clinician for both West African drumming and dancing as well as steel band at the collegiate level. While a consistent practice schedule is ideal but the same principle applies here: focused practice is ideal, practicing just to get in the hours will not progress a students ability (I know from personal experience). Some students enjoy learning exercises from a book while others enjoy learning pop songs by ear, forcing book exercises on a student who may want to learn Ariana Grande songs will result in inefficient practice. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments help fuel the students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
