For students of all ages I use a combination of the student's own personal experience with music along with trumpet specific brass pedagogy to achieve a student's personal goals. One of the first discussions we have is what kind of music the student likes/dislikes, what kinds of music they've performed and/or studied, and what their individual goals are as a musician. From there we collaborate to tailor a custom plan for the student; parts of this plan include a warm up routine and practice schedule, short term and long term goals, frequent listening suggestions and aural analysis, and repertoire and projects that are tailor made to be applicable to a student's interests. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
