In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! I have taught private music lessons, since I was at Youngstown State University. I also assisted marching band camps over the summer time, at various high schools. I continue teaching private music lessons, to this day at my current job and online. I love to start with the Essential Elements music books because those are some the tools that I began with when I was young and starting out. Depending on the student, I may move to other books, exercises, or solos. I am most focused on fundamentals, rudiments, and technique when instructing because those aspects are the building blocks of any great player and being able to incorporate those into different music really makes a difference. I meet students "where they are". Of course this can mean I drive to their home, but I really mean that I see what level and interest YOU are at, then work on expanding your interest to new levels. I will have a general lesson plan that allows for adaptation to where the lessons go. The lessons should be viewed as an art in themselves. I began teaching private lessons when I was 18 years old. I have taught all ages of students at all levels. I have successfully taught students with ADHD. I adapt the lesson to the student to find how they will learn best. I encourage creativity and challenge students to try composing their own music.
