There are many series of books now available with varied styles of music from beginning to intermediate levels such as those by Martha Mier, Robert Vandall and Christopher. I start with the basics on any level of singer just to get a feel for their voice. For children I like to utilize a lot of imagery to go along with making sounds first and then worrying about the correctness later. Training the ear in singing is very important and also learning about the body in terms of singing is key. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I do it by teaching students how to do scales and etudes while having fun and making themselves more motivated by setting their own goals and achieving them, which also builds up their confidence.
