This introduces them to the foundations of the guitar, such as basic chords, chord progressions, and the musical alphabet. As an educator I aim to introduce my students to skills that may be applied to life outside the practice room. I teach them to communicate, build confidence, and most importantly, develop patience. In 2013 I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master's degree in saxophone performance. Prior to this, in 2011, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor's degree in the same field. Things that we may explore include; warm-ups, posture, breathing techniques, tongue twisters, learning to read notation, and rhythm. I have three main books I use; these are my drum 'bibles'. Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence, and Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin. I like to teach fundamentals first, providing a strong basis with which to expand your repetoire. Then I like to emphasize song work. The best part of drumming in my opinion is playing with other instruments, and in addition to playing with recorded music, I encourage my students to find other musicians to practice and even perform with.
