Students don't learn if they don't feel motivated or enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way. I have always enjoyed teaching others. Even in high school, I consistently helped my peers with their learning and enjoyed helping them learn how to play percussion instruments. After starting college in 2009, I began formally teaching percussion privately and in groups at high schools in my area. I have since expanded to teaching guitar, bass guitar, and composition, incorporating compositional elements into all of my lessons. I have found that encouraging students to explore music through composing original material helps them in every other facet of learning music. Read More

I encourage my students to be enthusiatic dedicated and creative. I have taught elementary, Jr. High, and High school band as well as private students since 1980. Several of my students have gone on to be professional musicians and school teachers as well. I have performed all over the Front Range and throughout Colorado for almost 50 years. I direct a community orchestra and have played my trumpet in Jazz, symphonic orchestras, and bands for almost 50 years. I started teaching private lessons in 1974 and can teach any style and ability level. Read More

My methods change for each student, depending on ability and interest. For the most part I start with warm up exercises to get your fingers moving properly, then have a balance of going through instruction books and jamming and/or improvising in different styles, and slowly progress you and help with techniques to make you sound as clean as possible. I will help you be able to play whatever genre, or songs you like. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
For beginning students I usually start with the Standards of Excellence series of method books. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing, I will introduce solo repertoire students can begin working on to explore aspects of playing such as expression, tuning, phrasing, and different articulations. I use chorales to work on breathing, phrasing, and dynamics. For intermediate and advanced students, I will ask what they feel they need to work on to help guide my instruction. Read More
