My teaching started at my time at West Valley College. As a teacher assistant, I assisted students of a wide range of ages and levels. My experience as a teacher with younger students comes from my background in music education and choral conducting. I began teaching privately about a year ago. Ive had the opportunity to play all over the world with jazz bands, Afro Cuban ensembles, top 40 bands as well as my own band which is a mix of original music that is jazz, r and b, soul, hip hop, reggae, latin and funk. For beginning students, I place a large emphasis on the fundamentals i.e. scales, chord progressions etc. I also start them on solo pieces and like them to choose the pieces they are working on. I believe that if they choose their repertoire then they will have greater love and enthusiasm for the music. I also encourage them to push beyond what they think they can do. I am an experienced musician who has a passion for music and a passion for teaching. I have performed playing the violin, piano, guitar, viola, bass guitar, and the drums. Even though I play many instruments, I am only interested in teaching piano, violin, and guitar. Outside of being a music teacher, I am currently earning my Master's Degree in Mathematics. I am friendly and incredibly patient with all my students. I believe that all students need proper encouragement and constructive critiquing during the learning process, so that is something I put a lot of emphasis on. At the same time, I set high standards for my students and expect them to carry themselves as professionals during practices. I normally demonstrate to the student by playing in both styles (my style of playing and the student's way of playing) to allow the students to make comparisons and decide which style of playing they prefer.
