Blake has performed as part of the Grammy Jazz Band, Jazz Band of America, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, Iowa All-state Jazz Band, Iowa All-state Band, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, The Symphony of Northern Arkansas and the Brubeck Jazz Colony. Blake recently graduated with his masters in trombone performance from the University of Arkansas where he served as a teaching assistant to the trombone studio. For beginning students I like to start with the Standard of Excellence book 1. Getting through that book we would advance to Rubanks Advanced Method Vol. 1 book. Perfecting the sound and tone is key to making a piece of music sound good followed by inputting expression and giving it color to a piece making it have more characteristic than just a piece of music. For beginning and intermediate students, I offer my own rudiment book to start learning on a practice pad or snare drum. For learning drum set, I use a variety of books and resources. I will meet and discuss these options with each student to find the right book for them. For more advanced students, I have them transcribe entire songs from bands they enjoy.
