My teaching experience dates back to my high school, as I began teaching private lessons part time 7 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 3 years since graduating college. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. George has been a private piano teacher for at least twelve years working with Naperville Music, Ascendo Piano in Fort Wayne, Indiana and has done student teaching in music education K-12 in the Baltimore County, Maryland area. In 1969, I was awarded a Board of Governors' Scholarship in piano with study under Herman Godes and William Nelson. While a piano student, I studied organ with Dr. Clyde English, former student of Marcel Dupre. Read More

Depending on the age group of the student, my methods vary. With children, I will usually start by trying to gauge their musical interest and develop a strategy from there. Usually, this involves learning basic chord forms and progressions, until they are ready to start learning a bit of theory, and therefore how to solo. For adults, I simply ask them about their musical interests and tastes, and ask them what their ultimate goal is, and then set shorter goals to help achieve the ultimate goal. Read More

I am a teacher by vocation, because my work brings me satisfaction. I love my profession and treat it as a creative process. Yes, this is my creative process and each student is the material through which I create my masterpiece. I invest completely in my student with my knowledge, experience, love, attention and responsibility. I began my teaching career in 1994, working at the conservatory with students. Although it was not easy to start right away with adult students, I understood back then that this was my calling. Read More

I teach both by rote and by reading. When it comes to music theory, notation and reading music, I am also methodical in wanting my students to fully understand what they're reading so that it becomes so natural to them, it's as natural as reading a newspaper or understanding a conversation. Once the foundation is laid, a musical conversation can be had with the sound of their instrument. At the end of the process, students will find their love of music enhanced now that they know what they are doing and are doing it on purpose. Read More

I have a bachelors and masters degree in vocal performance with ample experience in classroom, one on one, and group education with honors, from Pacific Lutheran University and Northwestern University respectively. I have been teaching privately and in large settings for over six years and have taught ear training, music theory, classical piano, classical voice, musical theatre, and other genres as well. In addition to teaching, I am a performer nationally and have sung with reputable companies such as Des Moines Metro Opera, Vashon Opera, Symphony Tacoma, and have placed in national and regional levels of classical singing and musical theatre competitions. For most of my beginner students, I start with Alfred's Basic Method Book series (The only exception is Ukulele; I use the Hal Leonard's Ukulele Method Book). Beyond that, I work with each student to decide on songs and techniques that they would like to learn. I also make time in each lesson to introduce students to new music that showcases their instrument. As students progress, students will bring in their own examples for us to discuss together.
