My teaching experience has not been particularly extensive professionally. I have taught privately on and off since I was 20, however I have never really had the time to pursue it the way I am now that I am out of school. With younger students, we work slowly and reach milestones confidently to ensure the student feels they are achieving something while we work to promote healthy playing habits that won't lead to injury down the path. Seeing students' excitement and passion are among the most fulfilling experiences a teacher can have. I like to focus on fostering steady growth by catering to the students as individuals and work toward their ultimate goal of learning the guitar for whatever purpose they intend to fulfill. I like to keep lessons as open as possible for students to feel free to ask any question they like and for them to feel as though they can learn what aspects they'd like to hone in on, all the while instilling good habits like constant practice. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time a 5 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the guitar. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I began teaching in college and focused on motivating younger players to continue to exploring the instrument. I noticed early on that so many young students would stop showing up to lesson after just a few weeks. My goal has always been to expose every student to the potential their instrument has. A lot of this comes with making the lessons reinvent to "Real life". During drum lessons I often have a guitar or bass on me so we can play Example 23 from page 10 in a real musical setting. Instruments: Piano Trombone
I learned my fundamentals as a musician from my musician mother who is a vocalist and childhood piano teachers she set me up with from ages 4-12. At the age of 12, I picked up the trombone in the school instrumental program. I continued to play in school bands throughout my education and in high school, I was set up with a private trombone instructor. Throughout high school and college Ive studied with professional trombonists: Don Kennelly - SF Opera Bass Trombone, Dave Martell, David Taylor - New York, and Doug Beavers and John Gove. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
Depending on a student's musical background, I would typically start with foundational exercises like scales/arpeggios/broken chords and discussions of essential music theory elements to help a student progress. If the student is brand new to the flute, I would also do some breath work, and introduce exercises to improve tone and understand tuning. After the basics, I'd introduce solo repertoire and help students prepare for any performances they would like to take part in. Read More
