For beginning and intermediate students I utilize the Bastien Method books series, which includes supplemental Theory and Technique books that can be purchased if needed.  These students each select performance pieces which they enjoy and are level-appropriate from a variety of sources. More advanced students focus primarily on challenging performance pieces, several of which are selected as 'keepers' for practice and review.  Lessons include technique practice (scales, arpeggios, finger exercises), theory (from textbooks, flashcards etc.) music history, instrument mechanics, ear training and musicianship (such as rhythm and sight reading drills, dictation) and student compositions (notation and continuation methods). What do I teach? I aim to ensure my students have a mastery of the fundamentals of clarinet playing - such as tone, technique, articulation, and musicianship - and expand their repertoire and musical capabilities through warm-up exercises, etudes, solo repertoire, and orchestral/band excerpts. I teach students efficient practice techniques, how to practice performance, audition preparation, and more. I hold a doctorate degree in Music and specialize in teaching classical music from the Renaissance period, Baroque, classical periods, as well as pop and broadway. I teach all voice types, with expertise in mezzo soprano and countertenor literature, but vast knowledge in all. I use proven vocal techniques along side vocal yoga practices to help people to find their true, natural voice. I have found my way through music primarily as an instrumentalist, though I have enjoyed being able to stretch my talents into both teaching and writing. While studying Jazz at the University of Central Missouri, I was able to pick up a wide range of experiences with concert and classical playing. I believe that private, individual lessons are the only way for a music student to become good pianists, learn at their own speed, and learn all the different parts of music that need to be learned. My teaching experience began at the age of thirteen. I gave lessons out of my home in Webster Groves, Missouri. I have been teaching students out of my home for thirty plus years. I will also go to the home. I like to encourage students to practice daily. Each student has a practice log which they have to fill out on a weekly basis.
