Principal Viola of UMSL Symphony Orchestra

2017 - MMEA All-Collegiate Orchestra

Overview:

A St. Louis native, I have been studying the violin/viola since I was 9 years old. I am an enthusiastic and caring instructor who enjoys working with students and watching them grow. Currently I am in my senior year at UMSL, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Music Education. I currently serve as the principal viola in my school's orchestra, the UMSL Symphony Orchestra. In addition to music, I am also studying math and intend to become certified to teach both math and music! Education and music are my passions.

EXPERIENCE

I have performed all over the country since my days in middle school. I took on my first student in Denver about 10 years ago. I am still building my studio in St. Louis and would love to get the chance to include new students! At school, I regularly lead sectionals to help my fellow violists master the repertoire. I am a firm believer in the growth mindset and I believe that everyone can be successful in music with the right instruction. It is essential that students master the fundamentals; this goal can be achieved through hard work and determination!

METHODS USED

For beginning students, I incorporate Mimi Zweig's teaching philosophies as well as those from the Suzuki method. From there we build progressively according to the needs of the individual student. I generally follow the ASTA guidelines for recommended literature and progression. The pieces that students play in the beginning are important because they each teach an essential skill for string playing. Once a student has mastered the fundamentals and made enough progress, they are free to help choose which pieces they would like to work on.

LESSON STYLE

Every individual is different and I like to make sure that I cater to the needs of each individual student. I make sure that students have enough to do and that they understand what is required of them without making them feel overwhelmed. I provide a nurturing environment for students to express themselves as well as grow. I make sure that every student's technique is precise so that they have the tools they need to master the instrument. I will challenge students to be the best musicians that they can be!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
