Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn and practice more. I am a flutist and music teacher who recently moved to western Washington. I leads masterclasses, adjudicates competitions and auditions, and perform throughout the community, and have played Flute and Piccolo with the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra since 2019. I earned my Master of Music degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I began playing the xylophone at age 7, from 11-14 I studied the cello and played in my school's orchestra (receiving high remarks) and at age 14, my ears opened up to the sound of electric guitar in all its possibilities to make music. For beginning students, we start with simple scales, fingering patterns, short melodies, and based on that student’s needs and learning style, I decide which lesson plan to use (Suzuki, Hal Leonard, etc.). I use Tonal Harmony textbook excerpts to help with advanced theory lessons. More advanced singers receive more training in classical and musical theater technique. My philosophy is that every singer should be trained classically first. The relationship between student and teacher is foundational for growth. I take time to get to know every student as an individual to help them feel supported and comfortable in lessons. I encourage each student to set realistic goals and work at their own pace. We will work on a piece until it is performance ready, meaning it is note perfect, memorized, and blocked.
