For beginning students who are children. I typically start with Suzuki Violin Book or Hal Leonard's Essential elements. Once the students has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce some repertoire they can perform. For adults, I try to find out what music the students are interested in and as teaching basic skills, I will teach music what they would like to perform. I graduated from the Manhattan School of Music with a Bachelor's degree in Classical Cello Performance. I began playing cello in elementary school, and not soon after began participating in Youth Orchestras both in New Jersey and in New York. After attending several music festivals over the summer, I took an interest in music as a career. For beginning students I typically start with Hannon and my own finger exercises. I ask the the student to draw notes on a staff so they can get familiar with reading and composing music. It's also important, with all students, to make sure we can work in some music that they want to learn, whether it be Beatles, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Chili Peppers, Charlie Parker, etc. I think that's the best way to motivate a student, give them something they REALLY want to get under their fingers.
