I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment.  During the course of study with me, I expect students will improve technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with their performance, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.  I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy music making in any genre of music.  I am willing to work with students in the styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera, musical theatre, classical piano, and sacred music, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.

I have two years experience teaching private music lessons out of students homes. The music and instruments I have taught in private lessons include general music, voice, piano, guitar, and violin. I really enjoy getting the opportunity to work individually with students to help them achieve what they are hoping to with their music lessons and to make the experience enjoyable for them. I also have experience teaching in public elementary, middle, and high schools. At the elementary level I helped teach general music, chorus, and band. In the middle school setting I taught general music, chorus, special needs classes, and small group lessons. For high school I helped teach music theory, chorus, select chorus, small group and individual lessons.

I always begin lessons with technical or theoretical studies for students of all ages and skill levels.  For voice I begin with leading the student in singing through scales, arpeggios, and vocal slides before moving into song study. I normally chose a piece for students to work on and ask them to bring in a few songs they are interested in learning and we chose together. I chose musical works that are challenging and targeted on improving the individual student. Each student is different and should be treated as such I like to make sure that my lessons are engaging and fun to each individual I teach.  In flute lessons, I like to work on long tones and breathing to work on having control of the tone of the instrument. I like to work with technical execises by Marcel Moyse for more advanced students and with Rubank Method books for beginner students. Then I practice song study in these lessons as well.  This all stated, I like to involve people as much as possible in the structure of their lessons and am flexible to working with different wants and needs from lessons.

For beginning students at the elementary or middle school age, I usually reccomend method books such as the Rubank Elementary Method and Essential Elements, as well as any band books from the student's school (Standard of Excellence, Yamaha Band Student, etc). As the student progresses, I like to introduce solo repetoire and play duets. At all ages, I like to support what the student is interested in learning and incorporate it to keep lessons engaging and fun!

As a teacher, my teaching is very heavily based off of the students needs. I find that many need example and learn small things off of imitation, therefore I am able to provide examples. I have also had students who recieve information better if explained verbally. Overall, I begin with a set warmup each lesson and we then get right to work on repertoire the student is working on or that I have given them to work on. I expect my students to be prepared, ready to learn, and always open to new ideas!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
