I've always found lessons to be more effective when instructors utilized the song method; to me, introducing elements of theory through this method makes the information "stickier." I tell my students you're not studio/performance ready until you can play through a song 10 times without error. I encourage improvisation. It is very important for students to grasp the fundamentals. For intermediate students, we would progress on a track and focus on what they had for goals.
