For beginning piano students, I use Marilyn Lowe's Music Moves for Piano series. If a student already has purchased piano books or has piano books from an older sibling, I would not ask the student to purchase more books until we had used what they already had to its full capacity. For adults and older beginners (piano and voice), I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My teaching style is based on love, patience, kindness and understanding. My priority is to create a safe space for students so that they can express themselves freely and authentically. The most important aspect is to make learning a fun, enjoyable and fulfilling process by understanding the student and listening to what they want to accomplish. I grew up in the chicagoland area where my music career started young. I tried many instruments but eventually landed on guitar early in high school which has been my passion ever since. After High School I continued guitar and studied at Elmhurst College near Chicago, while there I performed with many ensembles in a large variety of genres and styles. I grew up in the Cleveland area and learned to play trumpet in my school music program starting in the fifth grade, which is typical of my students. I went on to earn a bachelor of music degree from Baldwin Wallace University in 1978. I've also earned a teaching certificate for music K-12, through Cleveland State University in 1993.
