For intermediate to advanced students, I teach from various technique books and progress to standard cello reperatoire, from works by Klengel, Lee and Popper to standard concertos and sonatas. I start students off by asking them collect ideas about their instrument and the music they enjoy. I have a student tell me what their goals are and we go from there. Some students may have a greater understanding of how the language on the page works.
