Generally speaking, I use a learner-centered approach, encourage astute questioning, a cooperative stimulation of critical thinking, and I prefer an active versus passive teaching style. Regardless of the student's age, I want him/her to have fun as much as possible, so I strive to make the unavoidable repetitive exercises more enjoyable by facilitating the student's creative input. I like to create a combination of my own supplementary material, along with what the students are preparing for classes or outside engagements. I believe in a very strong fundamental background and have created a set of exercises geared to maximize effectiveness, and guarantee progress. Excellence in preparation leads to excellence in performance, and a focus on fundamentals builds the skillset and the confidence to achieve. For high school students, I use more advanced methods and techniques that ready them for competitive auditions and college careers. I adhere to their high school curriculum while developing very specific lesson plans and practice routines that fit their desired goals. I tend to use solo pieces and repertoire that will increase the students' sight reading proficiency, playing dexterity, and target strengths and weaknesses, while refining a solid technique package. Mistakes are how every singer improves! With older students, I want to help students learn to recognize their own mistakes and areas they can improve on. I will always be ready to help them on trouble areas or encourage them when they get it right, but I want them to learn how to recognize it on their own so they can develop outside of a lesson! This comes from having them identify: where something didn't go as planned, why didn't it, and what can they do to improve it the next time. Read More

I love teaching guitar to motivated students. I have been fortunate to play and teach guitar for a living my entire life, and it is still exciting to help students find their voice on guitar. After teaching guitar for the University of Tennessee for 10 years, I moved to Nashville where I was able to tour the world playing music for 12 years. Whether playing a festival for 50,000 people on the side of a volcano in Japan, overdubbing a guitar part for a national Toyota commercial, or helping someone tune their guitar for the very first time, it is still exciting. I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician.
