For young beginners on wind instruments, I really focus on getting a good sound out of the instrument first. Then, I have them learn simple songs by ear to strengthen their relationship with the instrument. At the same time, I will teach them how to read music if necessary. I like to use the Rubank or the Sound Innovations band method books to start with. For my piano students, I go over posture and hand position first, in addition to the basics of the keyboard and fingerings for scales. Read More

As a formal adjunct cello instructor at Heidelberg University, I taught applied cello lessons, string method class, ensembles, and recruited students. I have taught both advanced students and beginners. I typically start the students off with open strings and rhythms and we learn the left hand separately so that the start is not overwhelming. With an intermediate to more advanced students we progress to scales (Jhnke, Galamian, Flesh etc...), etudes and exercises (Shradieck, Kayser, Mazas, Kreutzer, Wieniawski, Paganini etc...), as well as performing pieces (this often includes Bach and Mozart in every student's repertoire). I began teaching in 2012 as a senior in high school working at a community music school's summer arts camp in New York. I worked there for five summers as an assistant instructor. I taught beginner and intermediate French horn and trumpet lessons while working there. Many of my students, both at the camp and in my private studio have gone on to make District Bands and Honor Ensembles.
