For Children: I normally use The Hal Leonard Guitar Method series in conjunction with my own material I'll bring to lessons. I'll usually create a lesson plan that'll focus on all basic fundamentals that are goal-focused, while incorporating songs that'll help reinforce those mechanics! I like to keep lessons fun by bringing music that students enjoy and by using some music software on my tablet! I generally have a more laidback approach, but honest. Read More

I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" teaching method, which means that I do not utilize the same teaching method with every student. I realize that each student is a unique individual with different learning preferences. With each student, I design a different approach that caters to the student's needs. Also, I do not have a set curriculum and with each student, I will set up an individualized plan. Some method books I use include: Faber Faber, John Thompson Piano Course, and the Suzuki Method. Every student is unique in their ability level, dedication to the instrument/craft, et. al; therefore, I cannot expect that every student will be the next Larry Combs. I do, however, expect that every student take their responsibility for practicing each week, coming prepared to lessons, and being a good student. In lessons, I am kind and personable as anyone should be, but I like to make clear my expectations right from the beginning. Read More

I am motivated to helping people accomplish their goal of learning their instrument. The most important part of playing music is having fun! Music is about expressing yourself and you shouldn't be stressed out about learning how to do that. Each student has unique strengths and weaknesses and it's very important to learn each student's routines and habits. With this in mind, I will create an environment that facilitates encouragement and constructive criticism. As a teacher, I will always encourage my students, but they will get out what they put into it. Read More

In my curriculum, students start off by learning the basics of the guitar. This includes understanding the various parts, accessories and so forth. Along with those basics we work on tuning and pitch so that the student is comfortable with all aspects. As we move on students learn how to build and maintain a rhythm. Learning how to play chords is essential, and we begin to go through chord progressions, as well as how to recognize and memorize the various chords.I then show students how to read tabs and write music. My teaching experience dates back to 2009, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 11 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 4 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the guitar and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
