I earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 2008 and 2009 in Euphonium Performance and Music Education from the University of North Texas while studying with the renowned Dr. Brian Bowman. While there, I advanced to the final round of a United States Navy Band audition. From 2010-2019, I served as a band director in three different school districts in Texas; now I teach private lessons full-time in the North Dallas area. My style is individualized to the student's personality - what works for one may not work for another. One student may be very driven to learn theory and do written homework, while another may find written homework to be agonizing but love learning new pieces of music - I will work with both styles, with the same result - each student learns to play the instrument and learns the required theory to be able to play the piano, while hopefully enjoying it along the way! I was brought up classically trained on the Suzuki books but I am completely flexible. If you have or have heard of a set of books you like we can use that too. If you don't know how to read music we can focus part of the lesson on music theory and the rest on learning from recordings and playing by ear. Marcela started teaching violin and viola when she was 18 years of age at Cartago's School of Music and the University of Costa Rica. Later on she created her private studio when she arrived in Texas in 2007 after finishing her music studies, which she continues to do until the present day . I have been teaching students younger than me since I was in the 8th grade. I began professionally teaching when I began college in 2015. Currently, I teach students from schools involved in TMEA and ATSSB. My students have had success in All Region auditions, Area auditions, and solo and ensemble. I graduated in 2011 from SMU with my music degree in Trumpet Performance, and have been teaching privately in the Dallas area ever since. Although while at SMU my focus was mainly on orchestral playing and classical techniques, I am equally comfortable playing jazz and commercial styles, and honestly probably play those styles just as much as I do orchestral work now.
