I've playing in rock bands on drumset, pit orchestra on assorted percussion, marching bands in school and in community settings, and pretty much anything else you can name that has percussion in it. One thing I strongly encourage is the student to go at his/her pace. There is no judgement on the capability of learning an instrument and because of that I completely understand how long (or how short) a student can learn the drums/piano etc. I try to make every student feel accomplished in a session especially when the material being taught is new and intimidating. But regardless, there will always be a sense of accomplishment because as long as the student feels as if they accomplished something(small or large) I will make it my duty to make sure they know it. For very beginning students, I usually start with the Suzuki Method Books and All For Strings Comprehensive String Method Books. I usually encourage my students to read music, but for the youngest students I start by playing with them and having them copy me. Once they are ready, I start teaching them basic music theory that will help them read music. For intermediate to advanced players I institute a routine of practicing scales and etudes as well as a solo piece that is appropriate for their ability level. Read More

I first began teaching upon the completion of my undergraduate studies in 2004. At that time the majority of my students were beginners in their first or second year of playing. By 2008 I had completed the first of my two graduate degrees in music. With this accomplishment the students seeking lessons with me generally became older, typically in the junior high and high school ages.
