I savor every opportunity to bring my passion for playing guitar to each teaching session. My aim is always to develop each student's strengths and weaknesses in playing; developing their knowledge of the instrument and music; develping their creativity in approaching different types of musical expression; thereby, increasing their love of the instrument and music. I approach teaching with an emphasis on developing a student's ear for music, carefully balanced with learning practical, rudimentary knowledge and musical theory for effective, well-rounded musical development. Instruments: Bass Guitar Double Bass
I began teaching bass lessons when I was in high school. I taught bass for 11 years as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. I also worked as a clinician at the UAB Jazz Summit. Many of my students have gone on to play professionally and a few have gone on to become music teachers themselves. The most important aspect to teaching in my opinion is to make sure that the students remain engaged and excited enough to spend the time that will make them successful. Read More

Hello! My name is Tate and I'm currently an MBA candidate at the University of Alabama. I graduated from UA with a BS in civil engineering last May. I currently play rhythm guitar for the Tuscaloosa rock band MURPH outside of my class work. I've been playing guitar for over 12 years and recently decided to start teaching lessons to share some of the insights I've gained in that time. I have a background in a wide variety of music including rock, blues, funk, metal, and some country. Read More

For beginning students for playing the flute I would teach them about the horn, how to put it together, and the best way to blow into the mouthpiece with correct air support. What you learn from the start you tend to always carry with you, so it is best to learn correctly from the beginning. The next lesson I would ask them to show me what we learned the last time and if they did it correctly, we would move on and start to learn a note or two. Read More

I really enjoy teaching theory on the fretboard, and exploring chord construction is one of my favorite moderate/intermediate topics. In general, I'm a strengths-based, metaphor-heavy teacher, looking for ways to connect students with the material. Read More

My approach to teaching is something that I take very serious. I believe in being the best not being number #1. I love music and want to work with musicians who want to get better and take their music endeavors to the next level. One of my teachers at Jackson State University told us that as a musician you are supposed to get better as the years go by and as you get older you become even stronger if it’s vocals or instrumentals.
