For beginning students, be they young or seasoned, I start from the very beginning with breathing and the anatomy of the body as it pertains to singing. As my students progress (or depending on their understanding of the basics) I move into more detailed work, such as how to feel and focus the placement of the sound in a locations within the singing mechanism. I have been a full time musician on graduating from undergrad in 2010, since then I have played the most prestigious clubs in Chicago as a leader and as a sideman, The Jazz Showcase, Andy's, and the Green Mill. I have two albums under Chicago's premier record label, Delmark, and received extensive international airplay. I continue to perform all around Chicago playing jazz, Hip-hop, pop, rock, and funk. My academic endeavors include primary research on Marta Gentilucci conducted with Eastman School of Music at IRCAM in Paris, France. Rebecca will be continuing her research on Post-Spectralist vocal practices along with performing new works by living composers at the N.E.O. Voice Festival next summer. For my beginner students who are children, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and sometimes Lee W. Kikuchi's Musicianship for Strings. Scales and arpeggios follow shortly after. As the student progresses, I follow up with Harvey S. Whistler's Introducing the Positions (this book can also work with adults). Etude books such as Wohlfahrt and Kreutzer come into play when the student is ready. As far as repertiore, I use the first few Suzuki books and Barber's "Soloists for Young Violinists" for my younger students (the latter can also work with adults). Read More
