As technology and the nature of music is always changing and evolving, a large part of my teaching involves work with a metronome, the encouragement of playing along with recordings(even for orchestral excerpts), and transcription. I strongly encourage drum set students to find songs they like to learn by ear as well as learn to notate them. Regular practice routines, weekly goals, long term goals, and consistent metronome usage will all provide a strong framework for any student. Read More

Music is my passion. I believe that music is able to connect us in ways that words and actions simply cannot. I have been playing music in some form for over 20 years. I play trumpet and piano. In college, I was a lead trumpet player for the UNL Cornhusker Marching Band. As a teacher and mentor, my priority is to help the student set and work towards their own goals. My teaching expertise is classical and musical theater, and I believe that students can be very successful branching out to different styles from this technical foundation. I try to individualize the learning experience as much as possible, learning about the student's background his or her interests in music. Before entering graduate school, I served as a band director in Illinois public schools for two years. During that time, I taught a 4th grade recorder class, 5th grade band, 6th grade band, 7th/8th grade band, and high school band. During graduate school I was the instructor of horn for the Western Illinois University Summer Music Institute, and I have taught private horn lessons to a variety of undergraduate music students as a part of my graduate teaching assistantship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
