When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More

Music is my passion and I love sharing that with others! I am a recent graduate of Miami University with a Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Music Education with a minor in musical theatre. I've had a wide array of experiences in both the education and the performing world. On stage, I studied in Graz, Austria with the American Institute of Musical Studies performing German lieder in their masterclasses and studio recitals as well as showtunes in their "Broadway in Love: AIMS in Graz!" concerts. I normally start out with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures methods books for the piano students. This includes a lesson book and a theory book. The lesson book will teach the student the physical skill of playing piano by presenting them with leveled songs to learn. The theory book will focus more on the mechanics of music and playing and require some written work. These two methods work very well together to give the student a comprehensive experience with the piano. Read More

I am a beleiver that the solid foundation is the key to musical success. This foundation is broken down into 3 sections (mental, emotional and physical). I focus on the physical, lip strengh, arm and finger positions, and the correct breathing techniques. The mental and emotinal come with time and as the student grows these items will come naturally. The most importat item is to have fun, if your not having fun your intrest will fade. Read More

My lessons focus on trouble areas identified during the initial lesson. I would develop a plan of attack setting realistic goals that are both measureable, realistic and obtainable to achieve. A usual model lesson would consist of the following segments: 1. Intonation - I would spend about 5-10 minutes in this area training the student to properly find the center of pitch and listen for an adaptive center of pitch. Most flautists aren't playing in a symphony and will be exposed to an ever changing center of pitch. 2. Read More

The difference between a musician who can play a bunch of songs ,and a musician who can play any song that he/she can get into their head, is simply this: The persons ability to identify , in musical terms, the music that they hear-either from a recording, or in his/her head. That is where my students have an advantage-because that is exactly what they learn. Most teachers teach music as a succession of mechanical events in a given order, or as interpreting notes on a staff into performed music. Read More

I like to utilize many avenues of teaching and learning music. There are a handful of books I like to use for both beginner and advanced guitarists. The internet is a vast resource that contains just about anything you would want to know! Google and YouTube are great for learning songs, techniques and theory without need for a teacher or even an instrument. For intermediate to advanced players, I have some books, authors, guitarists and Internet personalities I might point to. Read More
