I have been playing guitar since I was 16 years old I've been playing music since I was 5 years old when I started playing the organ and the recorder. I continue to learn music and started playing a little bit of flute as I got older I also played drums in marching band in high school. I started teaching guitar when I was about 18 years old just so I could play with some friends who wanted to play but didn't know how to so I started teaching them and over time I realize that I was actually pretty good at teaching so I started teaching other people outside of my friends and started doing pretty good with it. I base my teaching style on the individual student and how they learn. Some students learn more by rote, others learn more by oral and others learn more by understanding theory. I always incorporate proper technique so that the student developes as quickly as possible. For those students who like working from a more traditional sense I work primarily with the John Thompsen and Bastien Piano Methods. Other students, especially students that start at an older age I work immediately by having them play familiar songs and melodies and as their technique improves providing them with more difficult music to play. I am fortunate to have many opportunities to study with great teachers and perform diverse music in many different countries with wonderful musicians. Discovering music of different traditions and cultures helps understand the general purpose of music. What music is, why we need it and why we want to perform it. It is never about notes and scales, it is much more than that. This is what I am teaching my students. Read More
Instruments: Piano
I encourage students to pick the music they want to play. For those who have no prior music knowledge at all, there are numerous beginning methods that are satisfactory. I teach harmony and ear training at a level in agreement with ability of the fingers to execute. It is so nice to learn to play by ear, (starting with very simple tunes) going from the brain to the keyboard without the crutch of the paper score. Of course this is the objective of preparation (study, practice) anyway, so the emotional feeling that the composer intended can be experienced and interpreted (and communicated to the audience) in a wonderful, magical way.
