ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

*Studied 2 Years at William Paterson University Jazz Studies Program for Piano Performance *I have been playing piano for the past 30 years, studying with a variety of teachers and professors from academic institutions.

Overview:

I started playing piano at the age of 8.  Since then I have studied throughout my grade and high school years with a number of teachers and college professors.  I continued my musical education after being accepted to the internationally renowned William Paterson University's Jazz Studies Program (consistently ranked in the top 5 jazz programs in the nation) at which I studied for two years.  I am a professional musician who has participated in a wide variety of gigs including weddings, corporate events, bands, churches and commercial composing.

EXPERIENCE

I have been playing the piano for about 30 years.  I have 10 years of teaching experience with a proven track record of retaining students.  I have taught a wide variety of students of all ages, skill-levels and backgrounds.  I have been working for Musika for 10 years.  In addition, I have experience teaching at several music studios and an after-school program focussed on enriching the lives of under-priviledged children through musical performance.  Many of my students have participated in recitals and competitions throughout the tri-state area.

METHODS USED

I subscribe to the Faber and Faber Method, Suzuki Method and Bastien Classical Series for beginning students.  The repertoire is supplemented with technical and sight reading exercises.  I especially subsribe to the Hanon Exercises which are a great tool for building finger strength, dexterity and technical mastery.  I expect my students to have a firm understanding of a variety of scales and chords (considered to be the building blocks of music) for which I subscribe to the Guild Musicianship Book as a good starting point.  I administer exams to all my students which include the subjects of scales, chords, terms, theory and repertoire performance.  Once a certain level is achieved I tend to diverge from method books and more towards individual larger-scale works.  I like to give my students a solid classical foundation first, upon which thereafter I am open to exploring other styles of music including jazz, blues, gospel and popular music.  I encourage my students to participate in recitals, competitions and to compose their own music.

LESSON STYLE

I am a patient instructor who likes to keep a relaxed atmosphere throughout the lessons while at the same time fostering an intensive learning environment.  I am especially good with children.  I expect my students to work hard, but my philosophy is that music should never become a chore.  It is my hope that music should allow my students to discover a part of themselves that they never knew existed, but above all playing music should be about having fun!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
