During my undergraduate work I taught general music at an elementary school, and did my student teaching as an instrumental teacher in an elementary school, and as a band teacher in a middle school. In my junior year I spent three weeks teaching in Uganda, where I taught high school aged beginners and intermediate brass and percussionists. Learning a new instrument requires patience, practice, and determination, and reinforcers can be a huge motivator (I know they were for me when I was learning). I focus my teaching technique on scales and arpeggios to show that music heavily comprises of these fundamental elements. I feel that this cookie cutter approach doesnt successfully work for everybody as it assumes everyone is the same.
