For beginners, I start by focusing on developing a good sound and ensuring that the student knows what a good sound is and what it is not. Air is the foundation of a good sound so, in my introductory lessons, I focus heavily on breathing and air support. This is a foundation that is continued throughout the time the student continues to take lessons. If a student has something specific they want to work on and are focused on that, I will guide them along, helping them with technique, feel, or anything else. However, if what they want is more broad, (e.g. they want to be a better musician in a certain genre), then I will take a more hands-on approach. For example, to help them improve on playing within a certain genre, I would give them transcriptions from the musicians in that genre, but also have them choose their own musicians to transcribe in that genre. My teaching method begins with fundamentals. First, I teach about the piano itself. Second, I teach the notes. Third, I teach tones and steps. Fourth, I teach about major and minor scales. After I lay that foundation for the student I continue with theory and note identification. The student is ready to take off from there.
