I am thrilled to have been teaching private voice for over five years. First and foremost I focus on vocal health, striving to meet each studentxe2x80x99s individual goals and interests with a solid foundational technique. In addition to teaching privately, I am also currently conducting the Westminster Singers choir and focusing on sharing the joy of singing with music lovers from all walks of life. I have performed with local opera companies such as Gateway Opera and Winter Opera St. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching privet lessons more then 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to empathize for younger students, as it tends to help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original materials, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. The fundamentals of playing are a great place to start with any lessons. Working with scales, breathing, and intonation are among those fundamentals that help build up ones playing at the strongest points. From there, it is important to incorporate those into etudes and solos, learning how they function within written pieces. Another important aspect of successful lessons, I believe, is giving the student a choice. Working with solos and topics they are interested in help make the environment more open and available for progression. Read More

For beginning and intermediate students I utilize the Bastien Method books series, which includes supplemental Theory and Technique books that can be purchased if needed. These students each select performance pieces which they enjoy and are level-appropriate from a variety of sources. More advanced students focus primarily on challenging performance pieces, several of which are selected as 'keepers' for practice and review. Lessons include technique practice (scales, arpeggios, finger exercises), theory (from textbooks, flashcards etc.) music history, instrument mechanics, ear training and musicianship (such as rhythm and sight reading drills, dictation) and student compositions (notation and continuation methods). I consider a number of variables when determining what and how to teach guitar to a student. First, I have to know what kind of music the student enjoys. Next, I need to know what level guitar player they are. If Im teaching a beginning guitarist, I will typically spend a majority of the lesson utilizing fun methods to build basic technique. If a student doesnt have a technical foundation, it may not benefit them to present them with music theory in the beginning. Read More

How do I teach? Weekly lessons (in-person or virtual) motivate the student and give them a chance to perform every week Student plays their assigned repertoire and I will often ask them to critique themselves to become active and critical thinkers and diagnosticians I'll share what I think the student can work on and we'll work on the repertoire together in the lesson I always have my clarinet out and will play with and for them when needed I send follow-up lesson notes and occasional resources The repertoire I assign is meant to challenge and excite the student as it lies just at the edge of their comfort zone but within their capabilities with a little practice I aim to always provide honest and helpful feedback Read More
