Overview:

I am a classical clarinetist who aims to enrich and inspire others through a career in orchestral, chamber, and solo performance along with teaching clarinet lessons to enthusiastic student musicians. I approach music with a holistic view, practicing and teaching useful skills both on and off the clarinet such as efficient practice techniques, fitness, mindfulness, and more. Originally from Edwardsville, Illinois, I'm a recent graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (2020) where I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance. I've studied with internationally renowned clarinetists from the Israel Philharmonic, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and more. My teachers have included Eli Eban, Diana Haskell, James Hinson, and Mary Sage. Currently, I'm pursuing my Master of Music in Clarinet Performance at California State University - Fullerton with the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Burt Hara. An experienced clarinet teacher, I've worked with students of all levels and ages and has studied pedagogy under the brilliant clarinet pedagogue Howard Klug at Indiana University. I've has taught as the clarinet instructor for the Edwardsville Summer Band Camp in Edwardsville, Illinois and been on the judging panel for clarinet auditions for the St. Louis All-Suburban Honor Band in Missouri. I've also held an administrative internship with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. I believe in the importance and necessity of diversifying one's skillset on and off the clarinet in order to thrive as a musician today. I was a founding member of the Digital Clarinet Academy's "THRIVE" program aimed at doing just this. Through THRIVE, I have had the chance to work with a mind-body educator, opera singers, fitness coaches, performance psychologists, and more all to provide new perspectives and ideas in how to approach and make music.

EXPERIENCE

I have been playing the clarinet for 12 years and have been teaching for over 8 years. During my undergraduate degree at Indiana University, I received a rigorous, well-rounded, and enjoyable education that included weekly private lessons, studio class, and masterclasses. Courses covered everything from Music Theory, Music History, and Aural Skills to Clarinet Pedagogy, the Beethoven Symphonies, and Postural Alignment for the Musician. I've played in bands, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo performances performing classical repertoire as well as premiering new music by composers today. Further, I have studied at summer classical music festivals around the United States and with clarinetists in London. Other than teaching private lessons, I have taught group lessons and classes, adjudicated clarinet auditions, served on the woodwind faculty in the Edwardsville district Summer Band Camp, was a founding member of the Digital Clarinet Academy's THRIVE program, and held an administrative internship with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

METHODS USED

What do I teach? I aim to ensure my students have a mastery of the fundamentals of clarinet playing - such as tone, technique, articulation, and musicianship - and expand their repertoire and musical capabilities through warm-up exercises, etudes, solo repertoire, and orchestral/band excerpts. I teach students efficient practice techniques, how to practice performance, audition preparation, and more. I strive to provide my students with the many valuable lessons learned through music off of the instrument such as building self-confidence, how to take criticism, how to be vulnerable and take risks, teamwork, mindfulness, and more. How do I teach? Weekly lessons (in-person or virtual) motivate the student and give them a chance to perform every week Student plays their assigned repertoire and I will often ask them to critique themselves to become active and critical thinkers and diagnosticians I'll share what I think the student can work on and we'll work on the repertoire together in the lesson I always have my clarinet out and will play with and for them when needed I send follow-up lesson notes and occasional resources The repertoire I assign is meant to challenge and excite the student as it lies just at the edge of their comfort zone but within their capabilities with a little practice I aim to always provide honest and helpful feedback

LESSON STYLE

I have something unique and wonderful to share with people, music. Making music brings joy to students - teaching them how to explore their creativity and artistry, express themselves, and grow to become more confident and capable people. The most exciting part about teaching to me is starting with a student who is a bit shy or unsure of their abilities at first and watching that student grow into a confident person who enjoys playing their instrument as they reach a new level of artistry! Through regular lessons, I aim to create a safe environment for students to express themselves, explore their creativity, and be excited about music and their instruments.
