I started playing violin at the age of 4, and started teaching at 17. In 2003, I started playing viola, and in 2005, I started learning cello. In 2010, I graduated from Stetson University with a Bachelor of Music degree with electives in Psychology. For beginning students, I usually start with the Faber Piano Adventures series. We also work on long-term pieces for festivals and recitals throughout the year if they are interested in playing for those. I strongly encourage them to participate in these, helping them to feel confident and secure in these performances. In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons.   Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music.  It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development.  Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills.    Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn.  My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music.  The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career.
