I try to create a relaxed, fun, trustworthy and focused, environment for the student. I like to ask them what’s interesting and appealing to them, then we start the lesson. When I teach at my studio and children come directly from school I give them a snack if they haven’t had any. Children cannot concentrate if they are hungry. Mostly, people have heard me sing or attended one of my performances and from that moment on mostly the parents have approached me to become a vocal for their children or themselves. My philosophy lies in structure - such as teaching in appropriate amounts that are challenging, but not overwhelming. I will always ask students what they're interested in learning and work that into the lesson. But the main focus for beginners is to be comfortable with the fretboard and to have fun. I break lessons down into technique, theory, and whatever the student is particularly wanting to learn. Choosing the right repertoire depends on how much they love the piece and if they are ready to handle the challenges.
