I apply a the credo "Song and Wind" to quote the late, great Arnold Jacobs, Principal Tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during much of their heyday. I started teaching when my daughter and my son were very small basically 4 and 5 years old we would listen to the music that they love to listen to together at that point I would point out to them sounded really good oh wow you hit those notes so easily and I would teach them what they did to produce that sound so easily and it stuck with them! I have used Hal Leonard and Bastien. If the parent has a older method book they wish to use I start there and fill in as I see needed. I encourage a slow start to get all the basics understood, then progress at the student's own pace and interests. Handouts and charts are supplemented as most students can't afford all the music books requested in a series. If a student feels frustrated then a short walk from piano to the other side of the room shaking out the arms and fingers gets us back on track. Read More
