For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I don't have just ONE method...because every student has different likes, and different goals, they need personalized lessons. Some enjoy music theory, others prefer to just learn a more basic approach. Since I learned formally (in school/lessons) and informally (by ear, self-taught and playing onstage), I can give students whichever method suits their goals, with as much or as little theory as they are comfortable with. I specialize in playing by ear, which is essential for students who want to play onstage or make music with others, without worrying about sheet music. Read More
