The following are books that I start my lessons with. In addition, I supplement with materials that my students are interested in learning. If there is a particular song or style that they would like to learn(and is reasonably within their ability level or I am able to modify), I work to teach it to them. Drums: ***The book chosen depends on a student's level and personal goals, but these are great books to start with: Drumset For Preschoolers by Andy Ziker(for students ages 2-6, or students that would benefit from a color-coded system initially) The Drumset Musician By Rod Morgenstein and Rick Mattingly(great for beginning drum beats!) Alfred's Drum Method(for learning rhythms and rudiments) A Fresh Approach to the Drumset by Mark Wessels with Stanton Moore(teaches an intro to a variety of styles, including rock, samba, jazz, etc.) Piano: Alfred's All-in-One Course This book has simple, child-centered lessons that are reasonably paced, teaches beginning music theory, and allows students the opportunity to write. I've been a trombonist for 33 years. I graduated from Judson High School in Converse, TX in 1991, where I was Band President. We retained 1's in our marching and concert performances, as well as with the Jazz Ensemble. We won First Place in a National Marching and Concert competition in Colorado Springs, CO my senior year, as well as performing half time shows at two state football championship games. I've performed professionally since then, acquired my music degree and have made it all the way to performing with stars for a sold out audience at The Hollywood Bowl. Read More

I have also been in bands, singing groups, etc. since I was a small boy in church and outside of it. For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better.  At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument.  As a student progresses into intermediate and advanced stages, several pieces from the solo repertoire (and if available ensemble pieces) become part of the curriculum.  Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques. I started teaching piano and voice lessons quite recently within the last year. I have had the rewarding experience of watching these young people learn and grow and discover more of their self confidence in performance as well as in life. I think a key point for any teacher is to be patient. The more relaxed you are the more at ease your students will be. During the first lesson, I get to know the student, find out their interests and determine which course will be the best start. The most important thing for all students is to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Piano: For younger beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred Basic Piano Library.
