I have played piano since about age 4, starting lessons at 5 and studying privately for about 8-9 years before college. I did not major in music in college, but I continued to play and occasionally teach piano and guitar. After a career as a university professor, I have moved toward my love of music by playing and teaching, mainly piano but also beginning guitar. For younger beginners, I will start with the basics of cello, mostly through the Essential Elements books. Once the student is ready, we will mostly stick to the Suzuki method, starting at cello book 1, and moving through each piece. For older beginners, I will still try to stick to Suzuki as a format, but will be open to letting the student choose what they might want to start playing. I will also try to keep a log of what students have worked on and need to work on, and would encourage them to do the same. Read More

I teach always. I teach by example, and I teach formally. My formal teaching background begins in church when I was 19. I did my mom a favor and started teaching/leading the children's choir. It was fun, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and our 2 performances went GREAT! It gave me a taste for it so I became an actual teacher in the SMCISD school district as a Focus Teacher (Special Education). With my piano students, I prefer to use John Thompson’s piano method books, along with performance study, listening, and impromptu music theory/acoustics lessons when the subjects arise. Depending on the practice habits of the student, they should have at least 2-3 non-method book solo pieces prepared within a year’s time. Each lesson is tailored to what he student enjoys, finds challenging, and ultimately will benefit from. My vocal students will find lessons crafted specifically to their current vocal abilities, working on a wholistic approach to singing including acting, prana, yoga, health and fitness, self confidence, lifestyle coaching, and of course, the act of singing! I started teaching back in 1995 due to repeated requests from customers at the music store where I was working retail at the time. Turned out to be the best decision I ever made as I left the retail world within 1 more year and never went back. When I was growing up I did not have a teacher which is why I love being able to do this so much.
