I work to find things that work best for each student. I believe that reading music is a very important cornerstone in learning to play an instrument. I have been playing the guitar for about 20 years. I was self-taught through middle and high school, and then studied the classical guitar at the College of William and Mary, where I graduated in 2010. I've played in a number of jazz and blues ensembles at both the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech, as well as played in rock and folk bands in New York and Virginia. For beginners I like to start with just a few chords, something to get them going and playing and get excited. So many songs have two or three chords! By getting a few under the fingers we can start to learn songs and get dexterity and scales going a little later. Practice is something I can't stress enough. I use many different methods since I am of the opinion that all methods have their strengths and their weaknesses.  For children I typically use the Suzuki method and suplement with exercises and outside repertoire to compensate for the weaknesses in the Suzuki method.  I also use the Royal Conservatory method and try to teach its repertoire when the student is at an advance- beginner or intermediate level.
